Hi Mark,

You wanted more regulation and they regulated you! These "regulatory bodies" are a scam and just used against members of the profession and you campaigned for them to have MORE power so they can screw more of us. Talk about turkeys voting for Christmas!

Hi Matthew - yes that is quite correct. If a physiotherapist ceases registration or is struck off, they can still use the title providing they make it clear to the public they are not registered. A notice in a waiting room or practice website is sufficient. Quite a deception when you think about it!

A real eye opener and highlights how the public are at risk and the misleading beliefs amongst hcpc members that their title is protected. Quote from the CSP’s website “The titles Physiotherapist and Physical Therapist are protected titles which mean that by law they may only be used by people on the HCPC register” which from what I understand here is that you could use those terms if you clearly identify that you are unregistered and have no intent to deceive?!

Hi Sara - nice to hear from you. The civil servant at the centre of this - Marc Seale - gave this written answer to the Chair of the Health Select Committee.

“If the person had resigned (or been removed) from the HCPC register but was continuing to practice from premises where his services as a chiropodist were still advertised prominently, but only informed patients in a fairly minimal way he was no longer on the HCPC register, we would regard that as evidence of an offence.”

It follows therefore, that when the same individual takes every precaution to inform the public they were no longer registered, they would not be committing an offence – including where that individual had been struck-off.

If you have a qualification in chiropody or podiatry, you can call yourself "chiropodist" to "podiatrist" - even when the qualification is not the recognised BSc or Dip. Podiatric Medicine. In these circumstances, you ONLY commit an offence where there is an "intent to deceive".

Kind regards

Mark

No, I had no idea. I thought you had to be registered with HCPC to allow you to use the title podiatrist/ chiropodist. Have I understood correctly? A person can deregister, take all mention of HCPC off stationary etc, say not registered with HCPC and still call themself a podiatrist/chiropodist? Can a person that did not do a recognised course call themselves a podiatrist/chiropodist if they state that they are not registered with HCPC?
I think I may have been a couple of years below you at uni? I am so sad to read of all that has happened to you, all my best wishes.
Kind regards,
Sara

I am sorry about all this, but nothing about the HPC would surprise me. I attended 2 hearings as a witness. They were a farce. I raised my concerns. I was told to go the the police as witnesses lying, and provably so, was not something they dealt with. Can only think they have to justify their existence. As with your case the problem ignored.

Keep going mark. I can't begin to think how hard this situation is for you.
This article was extremely enlightening. Needless to say I didn't have any idea about "the intent to decieve", and have always been lead to believe during my time at university, and with all my dealings with the hcpc, that merely using the term "podiatrist/chiropodist" if I was not registered would lead to prosecution.
